It’s a simple game really…..work the body and mind just a little harder than they’re used to and give them plenty of time and nutrients to “come back to normal” and they’ll actually bounce back even stronger.  Work them too hard, or hold out on the fuel and rest and they won’t be able to restore, they’ll break down.

Research has shown for years that attaining balance is what allows our body to thrive. 
 Most recently studies have shown that long workdays are associated with heart disease and sleep interruptions or deprivation (less than 6 hours) is aging each of us faster than we should be.  So what do you do about this?  How do you go about “getting back” or “regaining” each day?  Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s easy.  It’s not.  It takes commitment, dedication and the will to reinvest time and energy; it’s an ACTIVE PROCESS and as anyone knows, unless you’re able to invest BIG, figure on investing long.  Thankfully, the compounding interest rules work here too……long steady investments can keep up (and sometimes beat) large investments.

Generally speaking, getting started takes an honest assessment of your current habits.  Here are some sample questions you can ask yourself that have been associated with imbalance (i.e. the inability to recover fully and therefore bounce back stronger; the eventual inability to “endure”).

  • Are you getting the right fuels to achieve your goals?
  • Are you getting enough of them?
  • Are you getting too much?
  • Are you getting too little?
  • Do you know the difference?
  • How has your sleep been?
  • Are you getting at least 6 hours per night?
  • Are you getting more than 10?
  • How do you control your stress levels?  Is it working?
  • Are you happy?  Truly?
  • Do you find yourself constantly replaying the past or worrying about things to come?
  • How often are you truly “in the moment”?
  • Do you have good relationships and friendships?
  • Do you get enough exercise?  Do you get any exercise?
  • Do you know how much exercise is enough?
  • How about environmental exposure: are you a smoker?
  • Are loved ones or people “close to you” smokers?
  • Will you take 15 minutes today just for you, even if only to sit still?
  • What is your “purpose”?
  • How knowledgeable are you about healthy habits in general?

These are only a few…..the truth is, one of the reasons it can be difficult to balance the breakdown (stimulus) and the recovery is that there are SO many variables to control for.

If you answered these questions honestly and you don’t like the way it turned out, the conclusion is as equally simple as the concept…..decide to change.  Anyone can make a health change, anyone can recover and restore, just decide it’s important enough; that you’re willing to invest, even if it means sacrifice something else less important, even if it’s easier or more convenient to keep the status quo.

It’s difficult for sure and it takes effort for sure but it CAN be done.  We’re happy to report that it’s happening.  We have the luxury of seeing people make the commitment to recover every day, to get that excitement about the simple habit changes that are turning into big life changes and it’s AWESOME.  As always, we’re here to help nudge you along if you need it.  Now is a great time to get active with your recovery, to restore what you may have misplaced, but certainly isn’t lost:  your normal state.
